Key Details:

  • Shaun and Otmani met in 2007 through the online dating site "Plenty of Fish" and had a child together in 2010. Their relationship was marked by instability and emotional turmoil.

  • Otmani sedated Shaun Corey by spiking his beer with an unknown substance, likely rohypnol.

  • Once incapacitated, she tied him to her bed using her tights.

  • Otmani called Bernard Beddoe to the flat; a young boy (presumably Otmani’s elder child) heard Shaun screaming to be let go.

  • Otmani smothered Shaun with a plastic bag, ensuring he could not breathe.

  • After the murder, Otmani and Beddoe wrapped Shaun's body in tarpaulin and placed it in a plastic packing case.

  • They deposited the body in a green wheelie bin, laid horizontally in her bedroom, covered with clothing and blankets.

  • The body remained concealed in the bin for 11 days.

  • Otmani misled people about Shaun’s whereabouts, claiming he had left her. She sold Shaun’s car and phone to avoid suspicion.

  • Keith Jones, Otmani’s boyfriend, reported the crime after Otmani confided in him about the murder and showed him the body.

  • Police conducted an initial search but failed to find the body.

  • During a secondary search, Shaun’s decomposing body was found in the wheelie bin, sealed with adhesive tape.

  • Due to the decomposition, no positive cause of death could be established pathologically.

  • No toxicology was possible to confirm the substance used to sedate Shaun.

  • Karen Otmani was charged with the murder of Shaun Corey.

  • Bernard Beddoe was initially tried for murder and manslaughter but was later charged with assisting an offender.

  • The prosecution’s case highlighted the premeditated nature of the crime, including Otmani’s planning and attempts to test sedatives.

  • Evidence included testimony from Keith Jones, forensic evidence, and Otmani’s own admission.

  • Otmani was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 17 years.

  • Family condemned Otmani’s lies and expressed their devastation over Shaun’s murder.
