Christopher Marlowe, the Elizabethan playwright and poet, was killed in Deptford in 1593 under murky circumstances involving a tavern brawl, espionage, and debts. His death has fuelled centuries of speculation, with theories ranging from political assassination to disputes over money, making it one of South London’s earliest and most enduring mysteries.
