Background

  • Gagandip Singh was 21, co-owner of the satellite TV channel Sikh TV.

  • Mundill Kaur Mahil, 20, was a medical student in Brighton. She had romantic involvement with Singh and reportedly felt rejected (there was evidence Singh tried to pressure her sexually).

  • Harvinder “Ravi” Shoker and Darren Peters, both around 20 at the time of the offence, were Mahil’s friends; Shoker described as “obsessed” with her.

Incident + Key Events

  • In February 2011, Mahil lured Singh to her shared student house in Brighton.

  • At the house, Shoker and Peters ambushed Singh, beat him until he lost consciousness.

  • They incapacitated him so he couldn’t resist; then bundled him into his own car in the boot.

  • They drove him to Blackheath, South London. There, the car was doused in petrol and set on fire with Singh inside.

  • Initially, police thought the burning car was a “vehicle fire” or arson — not knowing about the person inside.

Outcome / Legal Proceedings & Sentencing

  • Trial revealed motives including jealousy, revenge, obsession, and perceived betrayal.

  • Shoker was convicted of murder; sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years.

  • Darren Peters convicted of manslaughter; sentencing was 12 years. (His role was as the “muscle” — helping with the beating and transporting Singh.)

  • Mahil was cleared of murder; convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent. Sentenced to 6 years.

Aftermath / Additional Insights

  • Media coverage emphasised how personal relationships and obsession can lead to extreme violence, even when motive seems out of proportion.

  • The family of Singh, already struggling due to his father’s past violent death, were particularly devastated.

  • The case led to some commentary on student-housing vulnerabilities, gender dynamics, and manipulation in abusive relationships.
