The Croydon Tram Derailment

About the Recipe

In November 2016, a tram derailed near Sandilands in Croydon, killing seven people and injuring more than 60 in one of the worst tram disasters in UK history. The driver was later found not guilty of gross negligence manslaughter, but the crash exposed serious safety failings and led to lasting changes in tram operations nationwide.

  • Perpetrator: No individual criminal conviction. TfL and Tram Operations Ltd later fined over safety failings.


  • Incident details: 

    • Tram entered a 12 mph curve at around three times the limit and overturned at Sandilands

    • RAIB identified speed and safety shortcomings.


  • Outcome: Driver Alfred Dorris acquitted in 2023 of health and safety charge; TfL/TOL fined £14m in 2023 after ORR prosecution.
