LGBTQ+ Lives Lost: Jody Dobrowski

Jody Dobrowski, a 24-year-old manager, was murdered in 2005 in a brutal homophobic attack on Clapham Common by Thomas Pickford and Scott Walker. His case was one of three tragic murders, alongside Geoffrey Windsor and Jaap Bornkamp, that underscored the dangers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in South London.

  • Geoffrey’s wallet was stolen, and a distinctive gold and diamond ring believed to belong to the killer was recovered nearby.

  • The park’s reputation as a public sex environment (PSE) led authorities to suspect homophobia as a motive.

  • Despite a £20,000 reward and witness appeals, Geoffrey’s murder remains unsolved.

Jacob (Jaap) Bornkamp (2000)

  • Victim: Jaap Bornkamp, 52, a talented florist who moved from the Netherlands to London in 1967. Known for his work with prestigious clients, including floral arrangements for Princess Diana's funeral.

  • Attackers: Two unidentified men in their 20s.

  • Location: New Cross Road, near Deptford Town Hall.

Key Facts:

  • June 4, 2000: Jaap and his friend were attacked while walking home from a sauna. Jaap died from a stab wound to the chest, severing an artery near his heart.

  • Investigation: The murder weapon was found, and two men were arrested but never charged.

  • CCTV footage of potential witnesses and suspects was enhanced by NASA scientists but failed to lead to arrests.

  • Jaap’s partner, Danny O’Neill, successfully petitioned for changes to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) rules, ensuring LGBTQ+ partners could claim compensation.

  • Jaap was buried in Beckenham Cemetery, marked by a stone Great Dane in honour of his cherished pets.
